Summer Reading

Have you heard of the “summer slide”? Unfortunately, it’s not the fun kind of slide you’ll find at a water park or playground. This slide is different. It’s a slide that no parent wants their child to ride. The summer slide is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn’t in session. Numerous studies show that kids who don’t read during summer vacation actually slip in reading ability by the time autumn rolls around. In order to avoid this, keep your children learning all summer long by provide opportunities throughout the summer to keep kids’ academic skills sharp. There are many ways to do this AND have fun in the process. Use this link to find some great ideas:

2019-2020 School Supplies

The school supply lists for PreK – 5th grade can be found here: 2019-20 School Supply Lists. Having these ready for the first day of school allows your child to be prepared and organized, setting them up with a great foundation for learning. Please do not send your child with a rolling backpack as those become cumbersome in the classroom. If you have any questions, please contact your teacher for clarification.

Test-Taking Preparation for Grades 3-5

Our 3-5 Grade students are working hard to prepare for the online features that will be used during SOL testing this spring.  The features that were brand new a couple years ago continue to be great changes from the old features (2016 & prior) of the SOL test, but these “whistles and bells” can still be challenging.  We are practicing in class, but if you would like to take a look at these features in addition to providing extra practice for your child, please click on this link.   A login is not needed as you may click on practice and go to any subject and grade level. You can explore the many tools, background colors, technology enhanced questions and much more with your child that can provide much benefit with test taking strategies.

NWEA MAP Testing Dates and SOL Testing Dates are listed below.  Please mark your calendars so that your student will be prepared to take a test with the class on the scheduled date.  Of course, there is an opportunity for make-ups upon student return, but marking your calendars will create the expected routine necessary in order for students to show their best work.  In addition, more detailed information regarding the tests will come home in student folders as we approach the testing windows.
